Moment 2

On Sunday evening I did a ten and a half mile walk/jog from my house to the Capitol and on to the National's baseball stadium, then back home along the Potomac river. It was long and sweaty (even though the humidity was "low"). I lost three and half pounds in sweat during those three hours.

While I was on my way to the Capitol I found my way to the entrance to the third street tunnel. I was not aiming to go that way, I just ended up there. I suddenly remembered the only other time I had been there. There was barely a soul there besides myself. Very different than the last time. I did not make it through the tunnel that day, and I would not make it through today either. There is no pedestrian access, cars only.

My wife and I stood in very cold air, but we were huddled in a pack of thousands of people, so that helped. We stood there for more than an hour, waiting, waiting, waiting to see if we could get through and on to the Mall to see the inauguration of Barack Obama. We continued waiting, with no word from the police, who were blocking our path, as to whether they would be letting us through. We did not have tickets for the event, so we were just trying to find a spot on the Mall. We decided to head back the way we came and get onto the Mall from the other end. We had to push our way out of the pack of bodies surrounding us. Many persons asked us where we were going, "Finding another way," I answered. After walking about twenty blocks in the wrong direction we found another access to the Mall. It was not what we had planned, but is quite a memory.
